What Not to Buy!
I collaborated with my friends and family to come up with this list because I was having brain block trying to think of items I wouldn't get. Well let's get to it!
1. Underwear, socks, and bra's: I would never buy any of these items unless they were brand new in the package. Except for underwear... I am just never buying them in a thrift store or at a yard sale. My under garments will just have to be purchased at a retail store and that's final. You just never know where those things have been or what they have gone through.
2. Used bathing suit bottoms. It goes with the underwear; you just don't know what has happened in those things. However, if the tags are still on then go for it because I would!
3. Mattresses: Caution! The next fact may make you cringe. Did you know that that adult bed bugs can survive for 5 months without a host to feed on??!! That means you could potentially be bringing home some unwanted friends with that used mattresses. I will never buy a mattress secondhand. Not after knowing that fact.
4. Along with mattresses goes pillows. I am not talking about pillow cases or sheets because they can be washed and cleaned but actual pillows. Yes they also can be washed but a washer won't get all the stuffing inside clean. So pillows are a no go for me!
5. Still going with the stuffing topic another thing I would purchase is stuffed animals. Though, I do have an exception for this, well two. If its brand new still in the package okay and my other exception is using stuffed animals as dog toys. I would still wash them and all that but it doesn't creep me out as much.
6. Make up or other hygiene products. Used or new, I am not a fan of buying makeup from yard sales or thrift stores. If its brand new I can understand. I don't wear enough make up to even look for brand new stuff. If its used don't buy it. Using used make up isn't clean or healthy in my book.
7. Used sports equipment such as knee pads for baseball and softball and helmets. People have sweat in those things! Also, when it comes to helmets, they can "expire." Helmets lose their protecting ability after so many bangs and crashes. It is safer to buy a new helmet from the store. A little extra money for safety reasons is the way to go.
8. Used flip flops. I am not talking about the nice sandal flip flops but the $1 Old Navy ones. First of all you can get brand new ones at Old Navy and Dollar Tree for a dollar. Plus, flip flops, after being worn for a few times really get the person's foot impression. They will be uncomfortable to wear because someones footprint is already embedded into the foam sole.
9. Hats. Caution... another gruesome fact but not as bad as the bed bug fact. Head lice can survive without a host for 24 hours. Now this doesn't seem as bad as the bed bugs but think about it. If someone drops a hat off that had lice and then it's put on a rack and you get it that day.... I don't want to think about it. Again, there is always exceptions to the rule if they are brand new.
10. Last but not least, baby products such as cribs, car seats, bottles, etc. Car seats and cribs expire or could have a recall and baby bottles could be used or had something other than milk or juice in them. Spend more for the safety of your kids.
I am sure there are more items that I can add to the list but these are the essential items I wouldn't buy and advice you not to buy at thrift stores or garage sales. There are always the exception items of course but just be leery with certain things.
