Scoring on Decor: What to Look for When Thrifting for the Holidays
When you walk into Walmart, Target, Kohls, Home Goods, etc during the holiday seasons you see so many of these beautiful decorations and you just want them all until you look the price tag. Wreaths are $40 or more, fake pumpkins are $15, center pieces are $25, and ornaments are $10 each! It's absurd and way out of my price range for decorations. I have a solution though but it does take some creative outside of the box thinking.
First, you have to decide what style of decor you are wanting for the holiday. Is it farmhouse style, traditional Christmas colors, turkey thanksgiving, or pumpkin thanksgiving? Once you have that chosen it is time to get shopping. Be prepared, though, to have to go to many thrift stores and yard sales. Thrifting takes work and planning.
Today, I am going to share how to think outside of the box with decorating your home using thrifted and secondhand items. Many of my ideas will be based on my style and will require a little up-cycling. Some, however, will be ready to go right from the store. I will give examples of things I have found at a thrift store or garage sale and how I use them to decorate for the holidays. I will break down the blog by categories of decor such as wall art, wreaths, center pieces, mantel decor, and more.
Wreaths:
Yes! All these door decor/wreaths were made with recycled materials and a few items from the dollar store. Christmas ornaments and Christmas balls are always a good deal secondhand. Some are beat up but that is what spray paint is for. All you need is a wire hanger, some super glue or a hot glue gun and your thrifted embellishments to make a holiday wreaths. Wreaths are not just for Christmas either. Spray paint can make all the different in the world! Find some Christmas ornaments, spray paint them Halloween colors or fall colors, add some thrifted treasures like bows, ribbon, or even a little scarecrow, and Voila! You have a new door decor.
If you are a mason jar lover like me, you prob have tons of the lids laying around the house. These lids can be made into many things like the tree up above or tied together into a circle and made into a pumpkin. Just keep thinking outside of the box and you will have something amazing for your home.
Center Pieces/Mantel Decor:
There are many things that can be added to a mantel or table that can really bring out the holiday spirit. Some things you can think about when looking are trays, candle pedestals, picture frames, gift bags, puzzles, fake floral, vases, mugs, fabric, and holiday themed knick knacks.
Find a frame, sand it, paint it, and lay it flat on a table. Add a candle and a spray painted knick knack you found and you have a cute coffee table center piece. Another alternative to a frame is a cute plate or tray like the ones below.
You can even doll up your candles with some holiday ribbon or turn a thrifted mug into a candle as decor.
Use gift bags as a mantel art piece. Cut the image you like to fit into a frame you enjoy. Add a bow and you have a beautiful decor item like below.
Candle pedestals can add tons of holiday spirit with a few embellishments and paint. Find some pumpkins, witches, or Santa Claus items and put them on top of a pedestal you have made out of plates and candle holders.
Though, sometimes you don't have to think outside of the box. Sometimes you just find something you really love as is. I recently had that happen to me with some fall pumpkin decor. I had been looking for these types of center pieces for ages and they finally came to me at a yard sale.
Wall Art:
Find a cute holiday puzzle at the thrift store, have a family night and put it together, glue it to some cardboard, frame it and hang it for the holidays. It's a simple added touch to your home.
Again, use those gift bags and put them in a frame.
It seems like everyone gets rid of their holiday themed plates but they can be reused as art. All you need is a picture mount and a plate and you have a piece of art. Even a pretty milk color plate with a bow tied around it or glued to the middle is so elegant.
Fabrics:
When thrifting, keep an eye out for holiday print fabrics, scarves, place mats, and shirts. Fabric can be turned into many things. You can take two scarves and turn them into a throw pillow and not even need to pick up thread or a needle.
Strands of garland or fake flowers can be beautiful as a table runner or you can find holiday fabric and make your own table runner.
Even baskets can be used to spice up the living room for the holidays. Find a cute woven basket and fill it with your throws.
There are tons and tons of more things to look out for in a thrift store or at a garage sale to decorate your home for the holidays. I have shared a few ideas with you and if you something in mind and don't know where to start but want to save just leave a comment and I will be more than happy to help you!
